Pellumbas Cave and Petrela Castle offer an unforgettable adventure near Tirana. This tour combines scenic hikes, stunning landscapes, and a journey into a fascinating underground world. Discover the impressive Pellumbas Cave, also called the Black Cave, located near the village of Pellumbas in Albania.
The trip begins with a scenic 35-minute car ride from Tirana to the village. From there, we start a memorable hike. The well-marked trail is of moderate difficulty. It passes through lush forests, the calm Erzen River, and views of Dajti Mountain. You will also enjoy wide panoramas of Tirana.
The hike to the cave takes about one hour. We pause at the entrance for a short rest. Then we head inside. The cave is large and feels like an underground mine. With torches in hand, we admire its unusual shapes. Pellumbas Cave is famous in Europe for its six clear karst galleries. It sits 350 meters above sea level and forms a tunnel about 70–80 meters long.
After exploring the cave, we continue with a scenic 35-minute drive to Petrela Castle. This historic fortress lies 12 kilometers south of Tirana. Its origins date back to the 4th century AD. The castle has strong stone walls and towers that show the style of medieval Albanian defense. Visitors enjoy superb views of the surrounding landscape. They also learn about the site’s long history.
You finish the day with memorable moments from Albania’s nature and heritage, highlighted by the unique Pellumbas Cave.
